Therapies

There are a wide array of therapies, here are just a few:

Psychoanalysis was developed through the work of a famous psychologist called Sigmund Freud. It is sometimes called "the talking cure". Psychoanalysis studies the unconscious mind; the part of the mind that you are not aware of, which may be harbouring repressed traumatic memories from childhood.  The therapist uses techniques such as dream analysis (interpreting "symbols" in the patients dreams which may be relevant), hypnosis to regress the patient back to childhood traumas, and free association (the patient says out loud every word that enters his/her head) Symbols can be interpreted.  Psychodynamic therapy a more modern version of Psychoanalysis, which takes less time but still uses the Freudian concepts.

Cognitive Therapy is concerned only with behavior. I instead of analyzing the thinking and emotions behind someone's behavior, they focus solely on how to change the patients behavior.

Client-centred counselling is a very effective treatment, though may not be suitable for those with very serious mental health problems.  The client is given time to talk in an accepting environment where the facilitator (not therapist) listens and empathises with his/her individual experiences.  Given this respect, the client gains the power and motivation to help himself.  The therapy aims to help the client recognise his/her own strengths and limitations, and the therapy is often accompanied with an increase of self-esteem.  The client becomes in control of his/her own fate and finds solutions to the problems.

Group Therapy

People in group therapy talk about their problems and their lives openly in a group and listen and support the others in the group. Often knowing that there are other people with similar problems, so knowing that they are not alone, can benefit the patient. It is helpful for those who need emotional support but do not want individual therapy.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

This involves patients to learn to live with their distressing thoughts and feelings by using the skills that they are taught. These skills are taught in individually with a therapist and in a group. It is about accepting how things are and not fighting against it, but using the skills to get through difficult times.

Brief Dynamic Psychotherapy

This therapy focuses on specific emotional problems. The therapist develops a therapeutic rapport with the patient very quickly, and unlike psychoanalysis, brief dynamic psychotherapy aims to solve the problems within  a limits number of sessions

Play Therapy

Child therapists often use play therapy to help treat and diagnose children with psychological problems It is sometimes easier for children to act out their concerns rather than talk about them. They use toys and dolls to symbolize their lives. The goal of play therapy is to help children express their problems
