Dealing with How Other People React

You have probably noticed that while some people react to your self harm with understanding, others may be very insensitive and not understanding at all. Anyone you come across may act differently whether they are family and close friends or whether they are total strangers. Don't feel pressure to explain your injuries and answer all their questions. You are entitled to give as much or as little as you feel comfortable doing.

Being afraid of others reactions may make people want to keep their self harm a secret, which may lead to telling lies about scars and wearing clothes to cover the scars. It could also cause a fear of meeting people, working, fear of attending exercise classes, and much more. The first step to being able to deal with others reactions is usually to become less self conscious and to accept yourself and your problems.
