Medication

 

Medication can play an important part in the recovery of someone who self harms especially If they are suffering from another mental illness. Antidepressants are commonly used as are minor tranquillizers. Sometimes the mental illness can be the case of the self harm and it is important to treat that quickly. Many sufferers of self harm have a depressive illness, maybe biological, maybe caused by stress.

Antidepressants such as Prozac have proved very successful in reducing repetitive self harm, probably by alleviating impulsivity. Though this is not the case in patients who are mentally handicapped. Other useful medications that have been used to treat self harm are the antipsychotics Thioridazine, Chlorpromazine and Haloperidol. Buspirone, Lithium and naloxone  have also proved helpful.

Other types of antidepressants called MAOI's, anti-anxiety medication and mood stabilizers are helpful in treating related symptoms such as depression, mood swings and anxiety.
